Can You Restore Tooth Enamel?

Posted on April 27th, 2018 by

There’s a lot of buzz surrounding tooth enamel, but what exactly is it and can you get it back once it’s gone? Our Lincoln Park dentists want to ensure you’re educated about this important topic, so your oral health can be at the top of its game.

What is It?

Enamel is the thin outer layer of your tooth and it’s the hardest tissue your body has! It’s translucent, meaning you can see through it, but note that enamel is not responsible for the color of your teeth.  However, routine maintenance and appointments with our Lincoln Park dentist can help get rid of surface stains that may sit on enamel.

What Does It Do?

The main function of enamel is protection from every day functions such as crunching, grinding, biting and chewing. It can also protect your teeth from harsh chemicals. Enamel is durable, but it can chip and crack if it’s not taken care of properly. Unfortunately, because there are no living cells in enamel, your body cannot repair or replace it.

Causes of Erosion

If you eat a lot of acidic foods, chances are, it may be slowly wearing down your enamel over time. Try to avoid drinking too much soda or fruity drinks, as they are naturally high in acidity. Medications, genetics, environmental factors, gastrointestinal problems, dry mouth and acid reflux may also contribute to enamel erosion. To avoid enamel erosion, use a straw when consuming acidic drinks and foods. It’s also ideal to monitor snacking, as it increases the chance of decay.
Of course, it’s important to visit our Lincoln Park dentists regularly to get a professional cleaning twice per year. If you have questions or you want to set up an appointment with us, contact Art of Modern Dentistry today!

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
