Chicago Dental Crowns in Lakeview & South Loop

Dental Crowns LakeviewDental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that are positioned over damaged teeth to provide stability and to cover the exposed portions. When a tooth breaks or is damaged by severe decay, these crowns can be used to strengthen the weakened tooth and restore it to its original look for a more beautiful smile.

These crowns are typically applied for the purpose of:

  • Beautifying discolored or misshapen teeth
  • Restoring broken or worn down teeth
  • Stabilizing dental bridges to hold them securely in place
  • Covering a dental implant
  • Supporting a decayed tooth

There is a vast array of dental crown types to choose from, including metal and porcelain. Which is the best option depends largely on the nature of the problem. Temporary crowns are often created right in our office to be used until the permanent crowns can be obtained from a dental laboratory. Dental crowns match the natural curvature of the teeth to provide a more natural look, all while improving the stability of the remaining tooth.

Preparing for a Crown

The process of preparing for a crown typically requires two visits to our office.

The First Visit

At your first visit, we will take x-rays of your teeth to take a closer look at the roots of the affected teeth and to determine if we need to take other pre-emptive measures before we apply the crown. Depending on the condition of the tooth that requires a crown, we can either build up the tooth or file it down so it will accept the crown properly and hold it securely. With our state-of-the-art dental technology, the entire process is comfortable and painless for most of our patients.

After reshaping the tooth, we will take an impression of it to send to the lab. This impression will instruct the dental lab in how to make the permanent crown, so it fits the contours of your mouth and is comfortable. Once the impressions are sent to the dental laboratory, they will be created to your mouth’s specifications in two to three weeks. We will place a temporary crown until the permanent one is ready.

The Second Visit

At your next appointment, we will call you in to remove the temporary crown and ensure the fit and color of the permanent one matches the rest of your teeth. If it does, we will cement it in place to give you a uniform look you want in your teeth.
