Orthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics: Matching a Job Description to the Name

Posted on October 13th, 2011 by

Orthodontics, periodontics, and endodontics are common words in the dental world. This guide is designed to help you understand these terms when speaking with your dentist.

  • Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the practice of using braces or other appliances to straighten teeth and fix problems with the patient’s jaw or bite. Overbites, underbites, and other malocclusions can be fixed with braces and other orthodontics. Dentists can use traditional metal braces, tooth-colored braces, or even clear invisalign trays to correct the spacing and placement of a patient’s teeth.

  • Periodontics

Periodontics is the practice of caring for the supportive structures of the tooth. These structures include the tissue surrounding the tooth, like the gums; the bone into which the tooth is rooted; and the ligaments that hold the tooth in place. These specialized dentists work to combat periodontal disease , which can lead to tooth decay, infection, tooth loss, and even systemic health problems like heart disease.

  • Endodontics

Endodontics is the care of the inside of the tooth, including the pulp, root, and nerve. An endodontist will provide care for a patient with infections or complications within their tooth. For example, if your dentist says you need a root canal , an endodontist will perform the procedure to remove the damaged root and pulp of the tooth, and then seal it to prevent further infection and damage.
These three dental specialties work together to ensure dental patients have healthy, straight teeth that are supported by healthy tissue. Without the proper care and treatment, tooth decay and tooth loss can become a problem for the patient. Dentists may have education and experience in all areas of oral care, or may consult with specialists to collaborate on treatment.

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
