Wisdom teeth can cause pain, crowding, and other oral health problems when they do not develop properly. Wisdom teeth extraction is a common dental procedure used to remove these third molars before they lead to more serious complications.

At Art of Modern Dentistry, our dental team can examine your wisdom teeth carefully using advanced imaging and a thorough examination. We will recommend treatment when necessary to protect your oral health.

If your wisdom teeth are causing discomfort or affecting other teeth, wisdom tooth removal may help prevent additional dental issues. Contact us today to schedule an appointment in Chicago!

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that erupt during the late teenage years or early adulthood. Often, they emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people develop four wisdom teeth, with one on each side of the upper and lower jaws.

These teeth were useful for early humans whose diets included tougher foods that required additional chewing power. Today, however, wisdom teeth are often unnecessary because of modern diets, utensils, and cooking methods. The human jaw has also evolved to be smaller than our ancestors’ were.

In many cases, the jaw does not have enough room for wisdom teeth to grow properly. When this happens, the teeth may become impacted, meaning they remain trapped in the gums or jawbone. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, swelling, infection, and damage to nearby teeth.

Because of these potential complications, dentists often recommend monitoring wisdom teeth closely and performing tooth extraction if problems develop.

What Is Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

Wisdom teeth extraction is a dental procedure that removes one or more wisdom teeth from your mouth. The goal is to prevent or treat problems caused by impacted or poorly positioned molars.

During the procedure, your dentist carefully removes the wisdom tooth while protecting the surrounding bone, gums, and nearby teeth. Depending on the position of the tooth, the procedure may involve:

  • Removing the tooth through a small opening in the gum

  • Dividing the tooth into smaller sections for easier removal

  • Cleaning and closing the area after extraction

Modern dental techniques and local anesthesia help keep the procedure comfortable. After wisdom tooth removal, patients are given instructions to support proper healing and minimize swelling and soreness.

When Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Needed?

Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth extracted, but it is often recommended when these teeth cause or are likely to cause dental problems. Your dentist may recommend wisdom tooth removal if you have:

  • Wisdom teeth that are impacted, which means they are trapped in the gum tissue or jawbone and are unable to erupt

  • Dental crowding because your wisdom teeth push against nearby teeth, leading to alignment problems or shifting

  • Tooth decay in your wisdom teeth

  • Gum disease or infection caused by partially erupted wisdom teeth

  • Jaw pain or swelling due to pressure from your wisdom teeth

Even if wisdom teeth are not currently causing symptoms, your dentist will likely recommend monitoring them closely with periodic dental exams and imaging.

Signs You May Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Patients often notice symptoms when wisdom teeth start to cause problems. Some common warning signs include:

  • Pain or pressure in the back of the mouth

  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the molars

  • Trouble opening the mouth fully

  • Jaw stiffness or discomfort

  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste in the mouth

If you experience any of these symptoms, a dental exam can determine whether wisdom tooth extraction or other dental treatment is necessary.

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.
