What is Cosmetic Bonding?
Having a tooth about which you are embarrassed is no way to go through life. Chances are, you spend happy moments hiding behind your hands because you are embarrassed about a cracked, chipped or discolored tooth. To fix this, our Lincoln Park dentist can bond tooth-colored composite to your problem tooth. It can also be used to close open spaces between your teeth, to make teeth look longer or to change the color or shape of your teeth. This project is called bonding and it can help boost your confidence. Here’s more information about the process.
The Procedure Itself
You’ll be happy to know that no preparation is needed for dental bonding. In fact, anesthesia typically is not necessary unless the bonding is filling a tooth that is decayed. Our Lincoln Park dentist will carefully choose a shade that matches the rest of the teeth in your mouth. A small amount of conditioning liquid will be placed on the tooth in order to hold the bonding material. Next, a putty-like resin in placed on your tooth and hardened with an ultraviolet light. The bonding material is further trimmed and shaped to match the rest of your teeth. The final step is polish.
How Bonded Teeth are Different
Composite resin cannot handle the wear-and-tear of everyday life like your natural teeth can. Avoid biting your nails and chewing on ice or pen caps, as this could lead to a chip in the material. Our Lincoln Park dentist can repair and chips that occur.
