Living With Invisalign in Chicago

Posted on June 24th, 2020 by Dr. Nikoo Daftary

For those who feel self-conscious about the misalignment of their teeth, any opportunity to straighten their smile is exciting. Once you’ve decided to seek help for your orthodontic issues, it’s time to decide whether traditional braces (with metal brackets) or Invisalign clear aligners will suit you best. Though both options offer effective tooth straightening, there are many aspects that help Invisalign stand out, including the ease of care. Today, we’ll be reviewing the care requirements for Invisalign in Chicago.

Daytime Routines

While traditional braces are adhered to the tooth and must be worn 24 hours a day, Invisalign clear aligners are removable and should be worn for 22 hours each day. Because traditional braces cannot be removed at any time, you must be quite careful with what you eat in order to avoid damaging your brackets or wires. Invisalign must be removed during meals, which means there are no dietary restrictions.

After enjoying a meal, snack, or sugary beverage, it’s important to brush your teeth before putting your Invisalign in. Failing to do so can result in food debris being trapped against your teeth. Any lingering sugars or acid can damage your teeth and discolor the aligner. For most people, carrying around a toothbrush for care between meals quickly becomes second nature. If you forget to bring your toothbrush with you, rinsing your mouth thoroughly with water after a meal is the next best thing.

Sleeping With Invisalign

For a majority of patients undergoing Invisalign treatment, sleeping with their aligners poses little to no issue. Some patients report increased drooling or salivating, which may be remedied by sleeping on your back with your head slightly elevated. Others may notice that their mouth is unusually dry; this is a sign that you are sleeping with your mouth open. Keeping a glass of water on your bedside table can help!

Taking Care of Your Invisalign Trays

In most cases, patients replace their aligners every two weeks, leaving very little time to damage a single pair. However, there are steps you can and should take to ensure you will be able to wear them for the full duration.

  1. Rinse your aligners each time you take them out.
  2. Clean your aligners with antibacterial soap that’s free of dyes and fragrances. Never use toothpaste to clean your aligners.
  3. Gently brush your aligner with a soft-bristled toothbrush, careful not to leave scratches.

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
