How Soda Affects Your Teeth

Posted on May 24th, 2019 by

With warm temperatures on the horizon, it’s easy to turn to a cold soda to find some relief from the heat. Unfortunately, many Americans have a soda habit that can be difficult to kick. Even worse? Soda has a negative impact on your teeth! Our Chicago dentist has seen firsthand the devastating effects that soda can have on teeth.

Acid Attack

The development of acid is one of the worst substances for your teeth. The sugar in soda mixes with the bacteria that is already in your mouth to for acid, which in turn, attacks your teeth. You may think that you are doing yourself a favor by opting for the diet or “sugar-free” version of your favorite soda, but in reality, this type of soda contains its own damaging acid as well.
Every acid attack lasts for around 20 minutes, and this 20-minute period starts over with every sip that you take. Over time, these repeated acid attacks begin to wear down the enamel and cause erosion.

Who is at Risk?

Having a soda once in awhile is not going to cause a significant amount of damage. It it those people who consume soda on a regular basis that will see the negative effects. Our Chicago dentist especially recommends keeping kids and teens away from soda consumption, as their enamel is not fully developed.

Limiting Decay

In order to protect your smile, it is important to limit the number of sodas that you consume. Other beverages to avoid include sports drinks, carbonated beverages, iced teas and other sweetened liquids.
Make sure to schedule appointments on a regular basis with our Chicago dentist as well!

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
