Cover all the Bases at Your Next Dental Appointment
When you visit your cosmetic dentist, a variety of factors should be evaluated. Make sure the following are covered on your next visit:
- Medical History: As with regular doctor visits, you should discuss all significant medical history, such as any conditions you have, medications, allergies, surgeries or hospitalizations.
- Oral cancer screening: Approximately 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, and the five-year survival rate is only at 50 percent. The bright side is that survival rates increase with early detection, so visit your dental office regularly for a screening.
- Tooth decay evaluation and x-rays: X-rays should be taken to detect tooth decay and other potential problems. In order to prevent more severe issues such as infection, cavities should be addressed and any necessary work should be done as soon as possible.
- Cosmetic dental evaluation: Your experienced cosmetic dentist will evaluate factors such as curvature of lips, shading of teeth, facial dimensions and other concerns you may have.
- TMJ exam: TMJ Disorder is a condition that effects the joint in your jaw. Ten million Americans have the disorder, so evaluating the jaw joint is important in your exam.
- Teeth grinding: Your dentist will try to detect any teeth grinding, as this can have negative effects on your bite and jaw.
- Evaluation of gums: Healthy gums are not just critical to oral health, but also to overall health. Research shows a connection between gum disease and other medical conditions such as diabetes and arteriosclerosis. Visiting your dentist for regular exams and cleanings are critical to preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease.
