Arestin Treatment for Periodontal Disease
Your gums are the foundation of all dental and oral health. When you don’t take proper care of gums, you put yourself at risk of periodontal disease, where a chronic bacterial infection is present.
The good thing is that there are effective treatments available, such as ArestinĀ®. It is a locally administered antibiotic often paired with scaling and root planing treatment that kills bacteria at the root of your disease and reduces the depth of the gum pockets.
How it works:
Arestin is made up of microscopic particles filled with the antibiotic minocycline hydrochloride. Over time, the particles release this antibiotic and kill bacteria, healing the gums. Your dentist will apply the treatment after scaling or root planing, and it will dissolve on its own.
This treatment is different from taking an antibiotic in pill form because it is applied directly to the site where it is needed. If you experience headache, pain or flu-like symptoms following your ArestinĀ® treatment, contact your dentist right away.
It is important to note that ArestinĀ® simply treats periodontal disease, and will not prevent it. You must keep up with proper oral hygiene to keep gums healthy moving forward.
