What You Need to Know About Sealants
What are sealants?
Tooth sealants are a plastic that are applied to the chewing surface of teeth, most commonly for children. The plastic bonds with the natural grooves of the tooth, preventing the formation of tooth decay.
How do sealants work?
Children aren’t always concerned with their dental health, and in most cases don’t brush thoroughly enough to clean deeply into the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Sealants smooth out these surfaces and eliminates the hard to reach places, making it easier for kids to effectively remove plaque when brushing.
How long does a sealant last?
Successful sealants will last three to five years, while others can last much longer; the longevity can vary. Some adults still have sealants intact that were applied during childhood.
Which teeth should be sealed?
The most common teeth to have sealants applied are the back teeth such as the molars. However, any tooth that has the characteristics which a sealant can correct (grooves on the chewing surface) can be sealed. The teeth that should be sealed are recommended on a case-by-case basis.
What constitutes the procedure?
The procedure can typically be done in one visit, and is an easy process. Once the tooth is cleaned, conditioned and dried, the sealant is poured into the grooves of the tooth and hardened with a special light. Normal activities can occur immediately following the appointment.
How important is it for my child to brush and floss after sealants are applied?
Brushing and flossing are just as important for your child. Sealants are just one part of tooth decay prevention; they cannot do it alone!
How much does the procedure cost?
When you consider the value of protecting your child’s teeth from decay, the treatment is relatively inexpensive. Most dental insurance companies cover the treatment.
