Summertime Oral Health
School’s out for the summer, and during this magical season, the days are lasting longer, the sun is shining brighter, and the birds are singing louder. However, mosquitos and sunburns aren’t the only things that can dampen your summer spirits. Toothaches don’t go on vacation during the summer, so while we can’t cure your sunburns or solve your mosquito problems, we can offer you some tips on how to avoid toothaches by keeping good summertime oral health.
Get Ahead
Catch toothaches and dental problems before they happen by scheduling an appointment for the beginning of summer. Scheduling an early season appointment can help you avoid the “end of summer rush” and can help you avoid any unnecessary and uncomfortable dental surprises during your vacation. Scheduling is quick and easy and can be done online. Simply select the location that is most convenient for you, and then select the times that are best for you!
Choose Water
On a hot summer day, one of the most refreshing beverages is a nice, tall glass of lemonade, but try not to make sugary drinks a habit this summer. Instead, enjoy a glass of ice water. The sugars in many summertime drinks, like lemonade and soft drinks, can erode enamel and lead to cavities. However, these drinks are often summertime essentials, so if you do choose to enjoy that tall glass of lemonade, follow it up with a glass of water to rinse away some of the sugar, and of course, don’t forget to brush.
Enjoy Some Fruit
Summer is the season of fun, but it is also the harvesting season for plenty of delicious fruits. Watermelon, strawberries, cherries, and peaches are just some of the fruits available this summer that can provide an alternative to sugary treats and earn you a ‘thank you’ from your teeth. Fruit packs many of the same flavors as its unhealthy counterparts, but while the sugary sweets can contribute to tooth decay, some of these fruits actually contain nutrients that can help keep your teeth healthy.
