How Often Do You Need to Replace Your Toothbrush?

Posted on September 10th, 2018 by

Brushing your teeth is an activity that ideally happens twice every day. It is necessary to get rid of any plaque, bacteria or food residue on your teeth. Changing your toothbrush is essential in ensuring that it is still working effectively. According to the American Dental Association, you should try to change your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Here are some signs that it may be time to get a new toothbrush from our dentist in Chicago.

Your Bristles are Frayed

Look at the head of your toothbrush. Are the bristles aligned with one another, or are they frayed and shooting out in different directions? If the bristles are not aligned, it may be time to change your toothbrush. Frayed bristles are a sign that your brush is no longer as effective as it once was in removing food and plaque.

You’ve Been Sick

It’s no secret that your toothbrush is a breeding ground for your bacteria, meaning it will trap the harmful bacteria when you are sick. The bristles themselves do not kill bacteria that is in your mouth, nor do they get rid of harmful bacteria that may get on them while you are sick. Make sure to swap your toothbrush with a new one after you are sick!

It’s Been Longer than 3-4 Months

In general, our dentist in Chicago recommends that you change your toothbrush 3-4 times per year to make sure it is working as effectively as possible. If you need an extra toothbrush, make sure to ask for one the next time you are in your office!

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
