Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth can grow in from the ages of 17 to 25, although some people may get them sooner or later than that. In some cases, wisdom teeth grow in and have room in your mouth to stay. Other times, you have to get your wisdom teeth removed. Contact our Chicago dentist today if you are beginning to see signs of your wisdom teeth.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
When your wisdom teeth are impacted, it means that the tooth does not have the room it needs in order to grow in properly, leading to severe oral pain. If you have an impacted wisdom tooth, it can tilt, twist, or become displaced. Common side effects of the impaction include:
- Bleeding gums
- Swollen gums
- Swollen jaw
- Jaw stiffness
- Intense pain at the impact site
- Trouble eating
- Bad breath
Extraction
When you have impacted wisdom teeth, you may need to undergo a surgical procedure in order to get them removed. An oral surgeon completes this task by making the area numb with a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. If you get anxious or nervous during a dentist visit, the surgeon may suggest sedation for the duration of the removal process.
Luckily, the stitches do not need to be removed, so you won’t need a follow up appointment unless it’s absolutely necessary.
