April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month – Schedule a Screening
The term “oral cancer” includes occurrences on the gums, tongue, inside of the cheeks, and lip cancer. It’s not visible to the naked eye, and catching it early can help lead to life-saving treatment.
In honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month in April, we highly encourage you to schedule a screening with your dentist.
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 54,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. Of those people, nearly 10,000 die from it.
As with any type of cancer, early detection is the key to survival. The sooner cancer is detected and identified, the sooner treatment can begin. It’s recommended to be screened annually, or more frequently if you tend to have mouth lesions or sores.
VELscope Oral Cancer Screening
One of the most accurate ways to detect any kind of mouth cancer is with a VELscope. This small device uses a fluorescent blue light that penetrates multiple layers of tissue. The dentist can see exactly where problems might be hiding because unhealthy areas are highlighted in a different hue. The entire procedure takes no more than two minutes, making it quick and painless for patients.
This April, don’t allow yourself to become an oral cancer statistic. Schedule a screening with your dentist or ask for a screening at your next dental checkup.
