Alternatives to Dentures
Dentures are a common alternative to tooth replacement. Although there have been many advances in dentures to make them more comfortable and natural for wearers, they can still be inconvenient.
People with dentures are often looking for another solution to missing teeth, such as dental implants ; however there are many other options available.
Periodontal therapy is a legitimate option for a patient who has teeth that are beginning to decay and may need them replaced. These types of procedures can only be done if the person has a sufficient amount of healthy bone tissue around the teeth. Some procedures, such as root planing or gum surgery, may allow the patient to keep their teeth.
Root canal treatment can help infections that have traveled into the nerves of teeth. A crown could be placed over the natural tooth before the infection spreads further and causes the tooth to fall out.
Bridges, also known as partial dentures, can also replace missing teeth with a false tooth. An overdenture can also serve this same function, as well as dental implants .
The final alternative, which we rarely recommend, is delaying treatment. If a patient’s gums and teeth have become infected, that infection will not go away on its own, it will only spread. Even if you don’t currently feel pain from the infection, it is always best to resolve it as soon as possible. It will save you from more painful and more expensive treatments in the future.
