When Should Kids Brush Their Own Teeth?

Posted on November 3rd, 2023 by

One of the top priorities for parents is ensuring their children’s dental health. You might brush your child’s baby teeth if they’re too young to do it themselves. When they get older, there comes a time when parents must decide when to let their child brush their own teeth. Teaching your child these techniques sets the stage for a lifetime of good oral hygiene.

Let’s explore some guidelines to help you navigate this milestone.

When to Begin

Children can start brushing their own teeth when they have the ability and understanding to do so effectively. Typically, children aged six or seven can start their dental care routine. You may need to supervise them for a few years to ensure they’re brushing correctly.

Supervision Matters

Even when kids start brushing their own teeth, keep a watchful eye on their dental routine. For example, they should brush for two minutes, use the right amount of toothpaste (a pea-sized amount), and not swallow the toothpaste.

Teaching Good Techniques

Spend some time teaching your kids proper brushing and flossing techniques. Don’t be afraid to do it with them so they can learn from your example. Teach them to brush all surfaces of their teeth, including the back teeth and tongue, to ensure proper oral health. Encourage gentle, circular motions to remove plaque effectively.

Regular Dental Checkups

Regular dental checkups are also crucial for maintaining kids’ dental health. The dentist will suggest when your child is ready to start brushing their own teeth. At the appointment, the dentist will also teach proper oral hygiene to avoid potential issues, like cavities or tooth decay. They may further recommend fluoride supplements to protect your child’s teeth and gums.

Remember, balance is the key to protecting your child’s oral health. Start teaching your child how to brush their own teeth when they can reach their teeth and understand what they’re doing. Still, it helps to continue monitoring and educating them on proper brushing and flossing techniques.

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
