– How Your Oral Health Can Affect Your Heart Health – Part II

Can Gum Disease or a Tooth Infection Lead to Heart Problems

Can Gum Disease or a Tooth Infection Lead to Heart Problems?

People who have severe periodontal disease or gum issues like gingivitis are at a higher risk for heart disease. This risk can increase if the problem is left untreated. Poor oral hygiene can also create plaque buildup, which gives you a higher risk of gum disease and inflamed blood vessels.

Bacteria and other microorganisms live within the plaque in your mouth. If they’re able to break free and enter your bloodstream, they can elevate your levels of C-reactive protein. This type of protein puts you at higher risk for inflamed blood vessels, heart disease, and stroke, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Can a Tooth Infection Cause Inflammation in the Body?

Many studies indicate that poor oral health is associated with inflammation in the body. This problem starts in the mouth with plaque build-up on your teeth, which can lead to bacteria entering your bloodstream. Then, the body’s immune system kicks in, which ultimately causes inflammation. Unfortunately, inflammation is known to cause a variety of health issues.

Brushing Well

Brushing Well

A recent study suggests that brushing your teeth more than twice a day is associated with a reduced risk of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and other heart conditions. However, there is not yet enough evidence to recommend teeth brushing as a preventative measure for heart problems. While more studies will be necessary to confirm these findings, it’s promising to see that something as simple as good brushing habits can make a difference in your health.

Dental professionals, like those at the American Dental Association, recommend individuals brush their teeth at least 2 times per day. Just as important as brushing regularly is the way you brush your teeth. You should use a soft-bristle toothbrush that’s able to get into all the areas of your mouth. You should also ensure you move the brush along your gums at a 45-degree angle and that the brush touches all sides of your teeth and gums.

Besides brushing regularly, it’s important to replace your toothbrush often, use high-quality toothpaste, and floss once per day.

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
