At-Home Dental Care: How to Stabilize Loose Teeth

Posted on May 18th, 2023 by

If you have a loose tooth that you’re worried about falling out, you’re not alone. Nearly half of U.S. adults over age 30 have some degree of periodontal gum disease. Also known as gingivitis, gum disease can cause teeth to loosen or, if not treated, eventually fall out.

The good news is that gingivitis can be prevented and is treatable. Good oral hygiene habits at home combined with regular dental exams and cleanings are essential. Even so, people can still have bouts of gum inflammation or bacterial infection. Here we will discuss how to strengthen loose teeth at home until your next dental appointment.

Kill the Bacteria that Causes Gingivitis

In addition to brushing and flossing twice daily, rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater helps kill the bacteria hidden between teeth and beneath the gum line. You can do this several times a day every day, or once daily for maintenance.

1. Mix:

  • 6 ounces of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of salt

2. Swish thoroughly in the mouth
3. Hold for at least 60 seconds
4. Spit, rinse and repeat

Daily, warm salt water rinses help draw out bacteria, reduce gum inflammation, and heal the infection. Over time, this practice can help improve gum health and stabilize a loose tooth.

Scaling and Root Planing

If the tooth continues to loosen or does not improve, schedule a dentist appointment. Scaling and root planing, or “deep cleaning,” often improve tooth stability. Dental splinting and other procedures are also options to help keep loose teeth in place.

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
