Effects of Gum Disease on Mental Health

Posted on February 24th, 2023 by

It’s known that having poor oral health may cause one to be embarrassed by their smile or decrease their self-confidence, but there’s also a direct link between gum disease and increased risk for mental health issues.

Studies show there is a 37% increased chance of patients with periodontal disease developing anxiety, depression, or serious mental illness. Individuals predisposed to tooth decay may also be at higher risk for brain health problems.

Brain health refers to how readily the brain can function normally and what neurological conditions may affect this ability. Many health and lifestyle factors affect brain health, including a healthy diet, exercise, and alcohol intake. As it turns out, oral health is a factor, as well.

Research shows the increased presence of cerebrovascular disease in those who are prone to gum disease, tooth decay, cavities, or losing teeth, but having a genetic disposition for tooth decay does not mean all hope is lost. It simply means a little more effort can be added to dental hygiene habits to help prevent poor mental health.

While further research is needed to have a comprehensive scope of how oral and dental health affects brain health, knowing a genetic pattern exists can help individuals create better habits now to reduce the risk of mental health problems later.

If you would like to learn more about improving your dental hygiene habits, please reach out online or call Art of Modern Dentistry. We will be happy to assist you in your dental health improvement journey.

I was a little hesitant to come here after reading some reviews on Yelp but decided to give it a try after being reassured by Millie (who is really sweet and pleasant) over the phone, and I'm really happy I did. The office is beautiful, modern, and clean, something that really makes a difference for me going to the dentist. They were very prompt, I didn't have
to wait long to see the dentist.

I was blown away by the warm energy that radiated from the staff. They made sure that I understood everything and knew what the cost would be before we moved forward. Each person took the time to sit with me and explain the process. These people clearly love their job, their co-workers, and have a passion for assisting their clients with their dental health.
