Dental Crowns Chicago
A dental crown is a tooth shaped cap that fits over your tooth, covering the exposed portion, and providing lasting stability to the area. If you suffer from a broken tooth or severe decay, a crown strengthens your weak or damaged tooth while also restoring it to its aesthetical beauty.
Crowns can be applied to:
- Restore a broken or worn down tooth
- Beautify a discolored or misshapen tooth
- Cover a dental implant
- Stabilize a dental bridge so that it stays in place
- Support a tooth that has worn down from decay
There are a wide variety of different crowns from metal to porcelain that are available to you depending on the nature of the problem. Temporary crowns can be formed in our dental specialist’s office while our permanent crowns are made in a dental laboratory. These crowns conform to the curvature of your teeth creating an all natural look, while also providing the stability of a natural tooth.
Preparing for a Crown
Preparing a crown for your tooth generally takes two visits.
Your First Visit. X-rays of your teeth are taken to examine the roots of your teeth and to determine if any other preemptive measure must be taken before the crown is applied. Depending on the condition of the tooth in question, our dental specialist will either file down or build up the tooth so that the crown can be put into place. With modern cutting edge dental technology, this procedure is painless and comfortable.
When the tooth is reshaped an impression is made to ensure that the crown will be comfortable and fit the contours of your mouth. The impression will then be sent to a laboratory where a crown will be manufactured to your specific needs in two to three weeks. A temporary crown will be provided for those weeks before the permanent crown is applied.
Your Second Visit. The temporary crown will be removed and if the fit and color are perfect, the permanent crown will be cemented into place.
